If you need a root canal treatment, you are not alone. Root canal therapy is a very common procedure that can alleviate your pain and save your tooth. At My Smile Health Center, we provide root canal therapy for both the anterior (front), such as incisors and canines, as well as posterior (back) teeth, such as molars.
Root Canal therapy involves the removal of inflamed and infected soft tissue, called pulp, in the roots of a tooth. Pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves and blood vessels. A root canal is a necessary treatment when the pulp of a tooth is damaged or infected either from a dental cavity or broken tooth structure caused by trauma. During root canal therapy, the tooth is opened up and the inside of the tooth is cleaned out and sterilized.
Root canal therapy is meant to relieve pain caused by infection or inflammation. While root canal treatments have a reputation for being painful, most patients report that they are comfortable during the procedure as the tooth is anesthetized. Your provider will give you specific instructions for managing discomfort after your root canal therapy procedure, so be sure to follow them.
After your tooth is opened up, cleaned and sterilized, the roots canals will need to be filled or sealed. This may be done on the same day as the root canal, or depending on your situation, your provider may want to wait about a week to seal your tooth. Based on your needs, your provider may also likely recommend a full coverage restoration, such as a crown, to protect the remaining tooth structure.
Our goal at My Smile Health Center is to treat the cause of your problem, not just the symptoms. If you require root canal therapy, we will also work with you to determine what caused your infection and how we can prevent future dental issues.
