That little checkup does more than you think.

We get it — life is busy. Between work, school, errands, and the occasional Netflix marathon, scheduling a dental exam doesn’t always top the to-do list. But here’s the thing: skipping regular dental checkups doesn’t just risk cavities or gum disease — it can also affect your whole-body health.

At My Smile Health Centre, we don’t just look at teeth. We look at the entire you. Your mouth is a gateway to the rest of your body. If something’s off in your oral health, it could be a sign — or even a contributor — to bigger issues like inflammation, heart disease, diabetes, and more.

If you have damaged or missing teeth, My Smile Health Center offers restorative treatments that can give you back your beautiful, fully functional smile. Many of our treatments give our patients options, such as choice of material, so you can choose the treatment that fits your needs, desires and budget.

What happens during a dental checkup?

A lot more than just counting teeth.

This is why at My Smile Health Centre, we provide you with a Comprehensive New Patient Exam, not just an exam. This is what to expect when you have your first visit with us:

1: Tour of the office to make you feel at home and share what happens behind the scenes
2: A brief interview to allow us to find out more about you and why you chose to visit our office.
3: An explanation of your visit itinerary so there are no surprises.
4: An examination appointment in the dental operatory would consist of the following:

  • a) Reviewing the Healthy Mouth Baseline
    b) Photography outside the mouth and inside the mouth
    c) Diagnostic Xrays as needed
    d) Digital scans of all the teeth to create digital models
    e) Screening of the tissues for oral cancer with a Velscope
    f) An assessment of the gum and bone health of all the teeth called a Perio Assessment
    g) Examination by a dentist to look at the health of your airway, sleep quality, jaw joints, jaw alignment and function as well as a check of your teeth for decay, cracks and wear.

This entire process may take 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the findings during the process. We may request blood work and send you home with some informative articles on oral and overall health. You will then be invited back for a Review of Findings Appointment 2 weeks later where we will spend approximately 1-2 hours with you to review all the records we gathered during your initial appointment.

You will have an opportunity to ask questions as we create a personalized and customized to keep you smiling -Inside and out.

So… what happens if you skip your checkups?

It starts small: A tiny cavity. A little bleeding when brushing. A bit of morning breath that sticks around all day. But left unchecked, small problems can become big (and expensive) ones — think gum disease, tooth loss, chronic bad breath, or infections that can travel beyond the mouth and lead to serious chronic diseases that affect your overall health.

And the big picture? Research shows that oral inflammation can be linked to serious health conditions like:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimers and Dementia
  • Respiratory infections
  • Even complications in pregnancy

In other words: You owe it to yourself and your loved ones not to WAIT.

The holistic angle

At My Smile Health Centre, we approach checkups differently. We view your oral health as one piece of your whole-body puzzle. That’s why we ask about your sleep, stress levels, nutrition, and lifestyle habits. It’s not just about brushing and flossing — it’s about creating a healthier, happier you.

Because a healthy smile doesn’t exist in isolation. It lives in a healthy body.
